Walk-In vs. Appointment: How Tattoo Shops in Des Moines Actually Work

Color tattoo detail showing saturated ink and finished tattoo work

This trips up a lot of first-timers, so let’s clear it up plainly. Not every tattoo shop works the same way, and knowing the difference saves you a wasted trip.

Walk-ins

Exactly what it sounds like. You show up, and if an artist has an open slot, they can often get you in same-day. This works best for:

Small, simple designs

Flash pieces (pre-drawn designs ready to go)

People who don’t need heavy custom design work

Flexible schedules where you can wait a bit if artists are booked

The tradeoff: you might wait, and if you want a specific artist or a bigger custom piece, walk-in availability isn’t the right path.

Appointments

Booked in advance, usually after a consultation (in person, by phone, or via message) where you discuss your idea, size, placement, and get a real quote. This is the right call for:

Custom designs that need actual drawing time beforehand

Larger pieces or multi-session work

Wanting a specific artist for their specific style

Cover-ups, which almost always need an in-person look first

How to know which one you need

Ask yourself: do I have a specific artist in mind, is this a bigger or more custom idea, or am I flexible and looking for something simpler today? If it’s the first two, book ahead. If it’s the last one, walk-in energy is fine.

What to expect either way

Whichever route you take, expect a real conversation before ink touches skin: placement, sizing, any health questions that matter for aftercare, and a straight answer on pricing. A shop that skips that conversation, walk-in or not, isn’t one you want to be in.

Not sure which you need for your idea? Just reach out and ask. We’d rather point you the right direction than have you guess and show up at the wrong time.
