Best Tattoo Shop in Des Moines: What to Actually Look For

Every shop in town is going to tell you they're the best. That's not useful. What's useful is knowing what actually separates a great tattoo experience from a regretful one, so here's what we think you should actually be checking before you sit in anyone's chair, us included.

1. Portfolio consistency, not just one good photo. Anyone can post their single best piece. Look at an artist's last 20-30 posts. Are the linework and shading consistently clean? Does their style match what you want, or are you hoping they'll nail something outside their usual lane?

2. Cleanliness you can actually see. A legitimate shop in Iowa is licensed and inspected, uses single-use needles, and should have zero problem showing you their sterilization setup if you ask. If a shop gets weird about that question, that's your answer.

3. How they talk to you about your idea. A good artist asks questions. Where's it going? What's your pain tolerance actually like? Do you want it to age well in ten years, or are you just here for the moment? If an artist just nods and starts drawing without any of that, slow down.

4. Walk-in vs. appointment culture, and whether that matches what you need. Some shops are walk-in heavy, some are appointment-only for custom work. Neither one is "better," but you want a shop that's upfront about which one they are so you're not standing around confused.

5. Aftercare instructions that are specific, not generic. "Keep it clean and moisturized" isn't aftercare instructions. You want written, specific guidance for the exact product they used on you (Saniderm, plain wrap, whatever), because different methods have different rules.

6. Comfort in the space. Private rooms, a clean waiting area, artists who aren't rushing five people at once. This stuff matters more than people expect, especially for anything sensitive or detailed.

We built Grand Entrance around all of this on purpose: private rooms, artists who slow down for consults, and a studio that's genuinely comfortable to be in for a three hour session. But use this list wherever you go. A shop that welcomes the scrutiny is usually the right one.
